The European Union introduced changes on the general rules for road safety. In particular, automakers will have to equip the cars sold in the EU with data recorders (black boxes) and lane-keeping assistance. This was reported by the press service of the European Commission.
“The EU institutions have reached a provisional political agreement on the revised General Safety Regulation. As of 2022 new safety technologies will become mandatory in European vehicles to protect passengers, pedestrians and cyclists,” the message says.
It is noted that the data recorders are necessary to obtain information to establish the causes of accidents; systems that record how closely the driver follows the road will be mandatory for all vehicles.
In addition, in the passenger cars and vans will install a lane-keeping assistance, emergency braking system and improved seat belts according to the results of crash tests.
The European Commission hopes that such steps will help to avoid at least 140 thousand serious injuries by 2038 and save more than 25,000 lives, which will bring the EU closer to the long-term goal of zero road mortality.
As The Journalist reported, the European Commission imposed a multi-million dollar penalty on Nike.
