The UN experts calls on Austria to address the root causes of violent extremism and radicalisation among young people travelling abroad to fight in conflict zones by the side of terrorists.

Austria has had one of highest per capita rates in the European Union of foreign fighters travelling to major conflict zones such as Iraq and Syria to join groups such as ISIS and Al-Nusra, peaking between 2014 and 2015. This is reported by the UN News Agency.

An estimated 317 individuals tried to join terroristic groups, 60 of them were intercepted attempting to travel there. Most of them were tried and convicted under anti-terrorism laws. Usually men have been travelling abroad to fight in conflict zones, but young women have also made their way to conflict zones. Sometimes entire families, including children, have travelled together.

«Some of the main factors for persons who travel abroad to fight were ideology, religious conviction, search for identity and a sense of belonging, economic and financial gain, and adventure. Many of the individuals who became radicalised were from a migration background and disadvantaged communities, and had experienced racism, religious discrimination, poverty and mental health issues», – the UN experts said.

As «The Journalist» reported previously, Austria is closing 7 mosques and kicking out dozens imams.
