Acting Economy Minister, President of Switzerland discuss prospects for cooperation in energy sector

Olha Buslavets held meeting with the President of Switzerland Simonetta Sommaruga, who is also the Minister of Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications, The Journalist reported referring to the press service of the Ministry of Energy.

The parties discussed the prospects for deepening cooperation between states in the energy sector. In particular, the agenda included issues of hydropower development, security of energy supply, increasing energy efficiency, increasing the share of renewable energy in the energy balance.

“We see prospects for strengthening cooperation in hydropower area. In the near future, we plan to start implementing large projects for the construction of pumped storage stations at the Kaniv pumped hydroelectric energy storage and the completion of the 5th and 6th hydroelectric units of the Dnistrovska PHES. We have a rich potential for the development of small hydropower, and the experience of Switzerland is very useful for Ukraine,” Olha Buslavets noted.

She noted that the Ukrainian market’s segment of highly mobile generation technologies and energy storage systems is extremely promising and attractive for investments. The volume of such a market equals to 2 GW capacity.

The ministry is also interested in expanding cooperation in the implementation of effective financial instruments, such as the creation of a green investment fund to finance projects for low-carbon Ukrainian economy.

“President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly stressed the importance of attracting international partners and readiness to provide them with comfortable, understandable and transparent working conditions in Ukraine. We have already launched new electricity and gas markets, improving procedures for obtaining licenses, actively implementing the corporatization of state-owned enterprises, implementing the requirements of European directives, and solving problematic issues in the gas production industry. I am confident that the energy sector is becoming more sustainable and understandable for investors,” Olha Buslavets said.

The parties also discussed the prospects for cooperation in the development of network infrastructure in the energy sector, energy efficiency and the like.
