The Ambassador of Belarus to Slovakia Igor Leshchenya, who supported protesters rallying against the incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko, submitted his resignation, TUT.by reports.

“I have indeed submitted my resignation letter. This is a logical step, since, as an ambassador, I have been appointed by the current president and it is assumed that I follow the policy determined by him. The Foreign Ministry believes that my civic stance has gone beyond this,” he said.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the decision to resign the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary is made by the person who appointed him, that is, the head of state. This is the president who considers “self-rejection” of diplomats, and relevant decree should be signed, but there is no decree on Leshchenya’s resignation so far.
