Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that the Republic of Turkey will not step back from the energy exploration work in the eastern Mediterranean, Anadolu reports.

“Turkey will not take “the step back” from the activities of its drilling vessel Oruc Reis nor other country’s vessels accompanying it in the eastern Mediterranean,” Erdogan said.

The President also criticized the Greek military exercises in the Eastern Mediterranean, claiming they endanger the safety for all sea vessels in the region.

“Athens plunged itself into chaos by its own actions, contrary to the norms of international law and the principles of good neighborliness,” Erdogan stressed.

Turkey/Greece relations, as well as Turkey relations with a number of other European countries have worsened recently due to the intensification of Ankara’s activities in the eastern Mediterranean.

This summer, Turkish companies began drilling wells in the Mediterranean Sea in the exclusive economic zone of Cyprus, the Greek part of which is a member of the EU.

Greece believes it has exclusive rights to operate in areas where Turkey is drilling currently. Ankara said they can search for energy resources on the terms of an agreement concluded with the UN-recognized Government of National Accord of Libya.
