The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia has decided not to recognize Russian passports issued to Ukrainian citizens in occupied Donbas.

“On August 5, the Foreign Ministry decided not to recognize passports issued by the Russian Federation to residents of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts after April 24, 2019, if the owner of the passport was previously not a Russian citizen. The decision enters into force immediately,” the Estonian Foreign Ministry emphasized.

According to Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu, this step is a response to the decision of the Russian president that allows the expedited granting of Russian citizenship to the residents of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts.

“Granting expedited Russian citizenship to the residents of eastern Ukraine is another attempt to undermine the independence of Ukraine and perpetuate the current unstable security situation in eastern Ukraine. This is completely contrary to the spirit of the Minsk Agreements,” said Reinsalu.

He also said that Estonia’s current decision reflects a strong condemnation of Russia’s ambitions of this nature.

Estonia has previously decided not to recognize the passports of the Russian Federation issued in the occupied Crimea and Sevastopol to local residents.
