Financial Investigation Bureau to be launched in Ukraine

Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has adopted in first reading the draft law “On the Bureau of Financial Investigations” (#1208-2).

This decision was backed by 270 deputies.

The bill provides for the establishment of the Bureau of Financial Investigations as the central executive body, coordinated by the Cabinet of Ministers through the Minister of Finance.

The Bureau consists of a central office and territorial departments registered as legal entities of public law.

According to the bill, the total number of employees is determined by the decision of the government and may be changed based on the report of the head of the Bureau. It is possible to transfer former tax police officers to serve in the Bureau on a common basis based on the results of the tender.

The explanatory note said that the bill does not provide for the liquidation of any units of the Security Service and the Ministry of Internal Affairs, but the powers to investigate economic crimes are transferred to the Bureau of Financial Investigations.

According to the bill, the Bureau carries out independent investigative activities, physical protection is provided by the authorities of the National Police.
