Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko said that without amending the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine, absentee trials of former President Viktor Yanukovych and his henchmen are impossible.

Lutsenko noted that the investigation on the case against Yanukovych, as well as the former heads of the SBU, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the massacres of participants in the Revolution of Dignity, had actually been completed and proved.

Therefore, Lutsenko asks the Verkhovna Rada to change the transitional provisions of the Code of Criminal Procedure in order to allow an extramural judicial investigation against suspected former officials.

“The case should be sent to the court, and we would have done it a month ago. However, after the creation of the GBI, the legislation conflict led to the fact that even already completed cases could not be brought to court without clarifying the legislation,” the prosecutor general said in a statement.
