During meeting of European Commission in Strasbourg, European Union provided for the allocation of € 590 million for joint defense projects, reports Ukrinform.

“For the first time in European history, the EU encourages defense cooperation with a budget package of € 590 million (€ 90 million for research in 2017-2019, and € 500 million for the development of equipment and technology for the period 2019-2020)”, says in the message.

It is noted that the first transaction within the EU on the budget for 2017 was the project “Ocean 2020”, which brought together partners from 15 EU countries to create a maritime surveillance system.
Over the next few weeks, after completing the coordination procedure with the member states, the European Commission will adopt the first-ever Work Program for the joint financing of industrial defense projects within the EU budget for 2019-2020. This program will take into account the proposals for the European program for the development of the defense industry, and will comply with the principles of Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO), the Capacity Development Plan (CDP) and cooperation between the EU and NATO.
