The Government of India has announced its intention to sell its entire stake in its national air carrier, Air India, NHK reported.

The government has published a document inviting those interested in acquiring this airline. It is noteworthy that the company has accumulated huge debts in recent years.

“Delhi expects the privatization of Air India will breathe new life into this airline. If successful, those who wish to purchase it will have at their disposal 146 aircraft, as well as a 100 percent stake in the low-budget subsidiary of the company – Air India Express,” the statement said.

These two airlines have transported about 26 million passengers over the past two years. Together, they account for more than 50% of India’s international traffic.
