General Director of GTS Operator of Ukraine Serhiy Makogon has said that Moldova can buy gas from the European Union through the Ukrainian gas transmission system cheaper than it buys from the Russian Gazprom.

According to Makogon, this became possible thanks to the concluded inter-operator agreements.

“The new inter-operator cross-border agreements signed at the end of December instead of the transit contract of 2009 open up new opportunities for our neighbors. Now they can freely use our GTS infrastructure for gas supplies from the EU,” the Director General said.

To Makogon, Moldova is now buying gas from Gazprom for USD 174. If Moldova will buy gas from the EU with delivery through Ukraine, the price at the entrance will be about USD 146. Savings are about USD 28, or 16%.

“I don’t know if Moldova will be able/willing to start deliveries from the EU, but there are clearly arguments for negotiations. The presence of alternative sources of supply significantly enhances the negotiating position and allows us to achieve a fair price,” Makogon added.

Lower gas prices at European hubs led to lower prices in Ukraine.

“The last auction at UEB [Ukrainian Energy Exchange – ed.] ended at a price slightly below UAH 4,000 (VAT included) per thousand cubic meters,” Makogon emphasized.
