The Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andriy Zayats has said that the Ukrainian Embassy in Iran made a mistake in its initial report about the plane crash near Tehran.

“Of course, the embassy made a mistake, and it was a big mistake,” the diplomat said.

After learned about the plane crash, the ambassador and consul both rushed to the airport, where they requested information from the Iranian authorities and from journalists.

According to the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the embassy was supposed to note in the beginning of the statement that the information had been provided by the Iranian authorities, since the Ukrainian embassy and the Ukrainian authorities had no other information at that moment.

“Once the bodies of the victims will be repatriated to Ukraine, we will analyze be made of why this happened, and measures will be taken to train staff if we see there was a lack of knowledge and experience. Also, those who acted contrary to established instructions and training will be punished,” UNIAN quoted the diplomat, as saying.

The main task is to ensure effective interaction with the Iranian authorities in order to collect evidence and clarify all the circumstances. Only after that it will be possible to return to the issue of posted information on the embassy’s website, the official noted.

Answering a question about opposition’s allegations that the embassy made such a statement upon the instruction from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the President’s Office, Zayats replied: “At 5 o’clock in the morning, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs works only in the format of operational duty, while the officer on duty does not coordinate statement or comments.”
