EU-Ukraine Women in Politics manager Alina Nychik specially for Journalist talked with People’s Deputy of Ukraine of the 8th convocation Viktor Chumak about the problem of gender inequality both in Ukraine and world, as well as discrimination of women in politics, in particular, in Ukrainian parliament.

«In my opinion discrimination against women in politics exists because there are very few of them in this sphere. Firstly, many believe that politics is not a woman’s business, it is better for women, for example, to deal with children at home. However, I believe that women in politics can be very strong and effective. Moreover, I know such women politicians in our state. A vivid example of confirmation of this idea is my colleague People’s Deputy Natalya Novak. She cannot be broken or her mind changed. She is true professional», parliamentarian said.

According to Viktor Chumak, female approach to solving problems, as well as female point of view on certain circumstances, sometimes helps to look at the situation or problem from another angle. According to People’s Deputy, in Ukraine, one of the key obstacles for women on the way to big politics is kleptocratic oligarchy, which has taken root in system of state administration, and blocks so-called social elevators, through which professionals must enter leadership positions, civil service and Ukrainian parliament.

«Ukrainian society is very twisted. Now we have a serious problem with the fact that we could not build a democratic country or a republic, but we have a kleptocratic oligarchy that has all access to all resources: economic, political, media, and social. This shut down social lifts.

Even if we wanted smart, beautiful professionals not only men, but also women to come, system is built in such a way that it is difficult for such people to get into Ukrainian politics. Therefore, this system should not simply be changed, but broken, destroyed, because such a system is not competent. When we change all this, same social elevators will open, which will give an opportunity to get into Ukrainian politics and women, including those who want to build a successful, independent and prosperous country», said People’s deputy Victor Chumak.
