New Secretary General of European Council elected

The current Deputy Prime Minister, the Minister for Foreign and European Affairs of Croatia Marija Pejcinovic-Buric will become a new Secretary General of the Council of Europe (CE), Ukrinform reports.

The Croatian politician was backed by 159 PACE delegates. Meanwhile, her opponent, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Defense of Belgium, Didier Reinders, gained 105 votes.

Pejcinovic-Buric stressed the priorities of gender equality, maintaining strength and deepening the dialogue between the member countries, promoting multilateralism.

The newly elected 14th CE Secretary General is going to take up her responsibilities in October.
