Today, on May 16, in Kyiv, on the occasion of World Vyshyvanka Day on Constitution Square near Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the opening of the art installation “Vyshyvanka – clothing of the free” and an action with public participation in support of Ukrainian political prisoners and prisoners of war took place.

In Ukraine every year on the third Thursday of May they celebrate World Vyshyvanka Day. This is an international holiday that aims to preserve the long-standing folk traditions of creating and wearing embroidered Ukrainian ethnic clothes. On this day, all over Ukraine and abroad, everyone can arrange a wide variety of mass events, flashmobs, concerts, solemn marches in embroidered shirts with the aim of preserving and popularizing our ethnic attire, which for several years has been a trend among domestic and foreign celebrities, Hollywood stars and even royal families.

On May 16, in the capital, on the occasion of World Vyshyvanka Day, an opening of the art installation “Vyshyvanka – Clothing of the Free” was held, which was also dedicated to Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Political Repression. As noted by the initiators of such an idea, this art object symbolizes the “prison cell” into which the embroidery was “concluded”. Thus, the organizers intended to restore in the memory of modern Ukrainians information about the Ukrainian political prisoners of the USSR, who were sentenced to life imprisonment or shot for wearing an embroidered shirt or talking in the Ukrainian language. The symbolic cross, which is part of the installation, symbolizes the memory of Ukrainians who died for national convictions.

In addition, the authors of the idea wanted to draw public attention to all Ukrainian political prisoners and prisoners of war, who are now behind bars in Russian prisons and colonies on false charges. Therefore, during the rally on the occasion of World Vyshyvanka Day, people came to Constitution Square near the Parliament, holding photos of Ukrainian political prisoners and prisoners of war in their hands to remind Ukraine and the world about them again.
