Peruvian President impeached due to corruption

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra announced his resignation after the plenum of the country’s Congress voted to impeach him. This was reported on the parliament’s Facebook page.

The Peruvian Congress voted to remove President Martin Vizcarra from office for accepting large bribes in exchange for government contracts.

The decision to impeach was supported by 105 out of 130 deputies.

The president is accused of bribery during his tenure as governor of the Mokegua region in 2011-2014. Vizkarra himself denied all accusations against him.

According to the law, the post of president should be taken by the speaker of the Peruvian Congress, Manuel Merino.

Vizkarra was elected head of state in 2018 after his predecessor resigned amid accusations of vote-buying.
