U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky discussed the postponement of the visit of the U.S. Secretary of State to Ukraine.
This was stated by State Department speaker Morgan Ortagus, according to the website of the State Department. It is known that on January 6, Pompeo and Zelensky discussed the aggravation of the situation in the Middle East, and the Secretary of State thanked Ukraine for condemning the attack on the U.S. embassy in Baghdad.
Pompeo reaffirmed the U.S. strong support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and noted the long-term strategic partnership between the two countries.
The press service of the head of the Ukrainian state said that Pompeo, during a phone conversation with Zelensky, particularly noted the release of prisoners and welcomed the conclusion of a contract for Russia gas transit to Europe.
“The parties discussed the aggravation of the situation in the Middle East after attacks on coalition forces in Iraq and attacks on the U.S. embassy in Baghdad. The parties agreed that any further aggressive steps could be a threat to stability in the region and global security. The President of Ukraine expressed concern about the possible aggravation of the situation in Iraq and the region if U.S. forces and coalitions leave the country prematurely,” the report says.
Zelensky also informed Pompeo in detail about the results of the agreements reached during the Normandy Four summit and about the government’s plans to restore peace in eastern Ukraine.
Pompeo, in his turn, welcomed the conclusion of an important gas transit contract to Europe. Zelensky also expressed special thanks to U.S. President Donald Trump and Congress for the decision to provide financial and material security and defense assistance to Ukraine.
