The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said that the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline is a geopolitical instrument to pressure on Western Europe, the Presidential press service reported.

«The Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline is a geopolitical tool to pressure Western Europe and European countries’ dependence on Russia’s gas supplies opens a large field for blackmail,» – Poroshenko stressed.

The Head of State stressed that the pipeline is economically unprofitable and service as an attempt made by Russia to weaken Ukraine, which «thanks to transit now receives USD 3 billion profit annually.»

The President also noted in an interview with the German newspaper Rheinische Post that Germany has a strong political lobby for this project.

«And the stubborn facts testify to this. Ukraine has more than enough transit capacity to supply Russian gas to Europe: 146 billion cubic meters, of which over 90 billion are just used. Why spending USD 20 billion on an unnecessary gas pipeline? Answer the question yourself,» – Poroshenko said.

«I can only warn our European friends, and this is due to our own bitter experience: to be so dependent on Russia’s gas supply, as Ukraine was several years ago, it creates a field for blackmail. I can assure you that this was not the most pleasant moment when Putin called me and said that the tap would be shut off the next day. Do not get into the same trap,» – summed up the President.

As The Journalist reported, US says Nord Stream-2 undermines collective Europe’s energy security.
