SBU: Russia’s FSB tried to recruit Mariupol citizen

Counterintelligence department of SBU revealed an attempt to recruit a citizen of Mariupol by the Russian security services, the SBU press service said.

A citizen of Mariupol was detained by representatives of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation during the crossing of the state border.

“They tried to persuade a man, using the psychological abuse, to unspoken cooperation for a collecting of information about the Armed Forces of Ukraine and Ukrainian law enforcement officers. At the same time, the FSB officer demanded from the Ukrainian money for not-creation of the artificial obstacles during carrying out entrepreneurial activities by him and his colleagues,” the department noted.

In case of a refusal, the FSB officer also threatened to block the entry to Russian territory for the businessman and make it impossible for him to meet with his close relatives there.

The SBU recalled that Article 111 (high treason) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine provides for liability in the form of imprisonment for a term of up to 15 years. At the same time, in accordance with the provisions of Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, a citizen of Ukraine is exempted from criminal liability if he did not perform any actions in response to a criminal assignment of a foreign state, foreign organization or their representatives and voluntarily informed state authorities about his communication with them and the received task.
