NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg reaffirmed NATO member states’ decision, adopted in 2008 in Bucharest, on the accession of Ukraine into Alliance. This was reported by the NATO press service.

Stoltenberg noted that this decision depends only on Ukraine and 29 NATO member countries, and the Russian Federation has no voting rights in this matter.

“This decision must be made by Ukraine and the 29 existing members of the Alliance. No one else has the right to interfere with such a decision […] Russia has no right to vote. It has no … no legal or real platform to influence such a decision,” the NATO Secretary General said.

The Secretary General emphasized that the joint training of Ukrainian military and Alliance soldiers, NATO’s support of the Odesa Naval Academy and the implementation of reforms bring Ukraine closer to membership in the Alliance.
