The new season of production of sugar in Ukraine may drop by 23-29% – to 1.3-1.4 million tons, and the number of working sugar factories may reduce from 42, to 34 – 35. This was reported by the National Association of Sugar Producers of Ukraine (Ukrsugar).
“We are already seeing a reduction in the acreage of sugar beet in the current year and, of course, it will have its consequences this fall, when much less sugar factories [than in the 2018/2019 season] will start up. According to our estimates, about 34-35 enterprises will be engaged in sugar refining next season compared to 42 working this season,” said Ruslana Butylo, the Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Ukrsugar.
She noted that taking into account the decrease in acreage and the number of operating factories, caused by the global sugar surplus, a significant reduction in sugar production and increase of sugar price are predicted.
“It is quite difficult to predict the yield and sugar content of beets, which have been almost completely sown. However, we can assume that there will be 23-29 per cent less sugar in autumn — 1.3-1.4 million tons — representing the lowest production volume since 2013,” said in a statement.
As The Journalist reported, a fire broke out at a sugar factory in the Chernivtsi Oblast.
