Taran, Borrell discuss foreign and security policy issues

On September 22, the Defense Ministry held a meeting between Ukrainian Defense Minister Andriy Taran and the EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy, Mr. Josep Borrell.

During the event, the Ukrainian side informed the EU official about the signing by the President of Ukraine of the decree “On the decision of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine” dated September 14, 2020 “On the National Security Strategy of Ukraine”, in particular, on the main directions of state policy in the field of national security and priorities of national interests of Ukraine at present.

The head of the defense department of Ukraine discussed in detail on security issues in the east of Ukraine, in particular, the situation in ​​the Joint Forces Operation area and measures taken by the Ukrainian side to maintain the ceasefire.

Andrii Taran also focused on the threats that arise as a result of the Russian Federation’s multinational strategic exercises Caucasus 2020. He emphasized that the military formations participating in these exercises, as well as the military command system involved in them can be used to carry out unpredictable escalatory actions and pose a threat to stability in the Black Sea basin.

In this context, the head of the defense department informed the European diplomat about the “United Efforts-2020” command-and-staff exercises with the Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, to which Ukraine’s international partners were also invited. The head of the EU delegation noted the efforts of the Ukrainian side to implement the “silence” regime in the JFO area and the decision of the Ministry of Defense to join the EU operation ALTEA in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Josep Borrell also stressed that the European Union strongly condemns the violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, the illegal occupation of the Crimean peninsula and Sevastopol by Russia, the militarization of the peninsula and noted that the EU will continue to support Ukraine in resisting Russian aggression, including by introducing a sanctions regime against the Russian Federation.
