The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) imposed sanctions against the leadership of the Iran’s Guardians Council and other oversight bodies over preventing free and fair elections in the country, the U.S. Treasury reports.

“OFAC today took action against five members of Iran’s Guardian Council and its Elections Supervision Committee, which are appointed by Iran’s Supreme Leader or his appointees. The Guardian Council, which is responsible for “vetting” candidates, uses this power to disqualify Iranians from competing in elections,” the ministry said.

Treasury’s action targets Ahmad Jannati, the Secretary of the Guardian Council, as well as four other members of the Council, including the former head of the Iranian judicial system.

The imposed sanctions aimed at officials for preventing the Iranian people from freely choosing their leaders.

As The Journalist reported, U.S. imposes sanctions on Rosneft subsidies.
