Ukrainian MFA comments on US national defense in 2021 spending bill

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine welcomes the US National Defense Expenditure bill for 2021 (NDAA 2021) approved by the US Senate on December 11 and by the US House of Representatives on December 8. The Journalist reports with reference the press center of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.

The provisions of this document stipulated, in particular, the allocation of a significant package of security assistance to Ukraine, including through an increase in available funds for the acquisition of lethal weapons for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as well as an increase in sanctions pressure to counter the subversive activities of the Russian Federation.

By its decisions, the United States once again testifies to its leadership in supporting Ukraine, its sovereignty and territorial integrity within internationally recognized borders.

We highly appreciate the strong support of Ukraine in the United States, the readiness of Ukraine’s strategic partner to continue practical assistance to our state in strengthening its defense capability in the face of ongoing Russian aggression.

On December 11, 2020, the US Senate by an overwhelming majority (84-13) and on December 8, 2020, the US House of Representatives (335-78) approved the US National Defense Expenditure Bill 2021 (NDAA 2021). The document provides for the allocation of USD 250 million to Ukraine for security assistance in 2021 under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative program, including USD 75 million for the acquisition of lethal weapons for the needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, which is USD 25 million more than in 2020 year. In addition, the NDAA 2021 provides for tougher sanctions against the construction of Nord Stream 2, in particular, the expansion of the list of services subject to US sanctions in accordance with the European Energy Security Law 2019. The 2021 NDAA must be signed by the President of the United States to take effect.
