Ukrainian parliament voted to lift MPs immunity

On September 3, during a parliamentary meeting, Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted at the second reading the draft law on the abolition of the MPs immunity, Radio Liberty informs.

This bill was backed by 373 lawmakers (no votes against, Abstained 3 MPs, 28 MPs did not vote). The amendments will come into force since January 1, 2020.

The bill provides for the limitation of parliamentary immunity. It was registered in parliament of the previous convocation by the fifth president of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko. This document proposes to exclude from the article 80 of the Constitution of Ukraine a provision that guarantees MPs of Ukraine parliamentary immunity and the inability to be prosecuted without the agreement of the Verkhovna Rada.

In June 2018, the Constitutional Court of Ukraine declared this bill constitutional.
