Ukraine’s doctors conducted an operation on replacing a heart valve to a 97-year-old woman. Prior to this, such operations have not been performed on people of such advanced age yet, TSN reports.

“This operation makes it possible to do without an incision, which is the most traumatic for patients, without using artificial blood circulation and, strictly speaking, without ‘stopping’ the heart,” said cardiologist Yevhen Marushko.

Surgeons needed two small incisions in the heart area and near the femoral artery to install the valve. Through one, the valve was inserted, and through the other – the tube that controlled the valve’s position.

“This case showed that elderly patients can be provided with qualified assistance with low risks so that they continue to live on,” said Marushko.

As The Journalist reported, Ukrainian and American surgeons will conduct free operations in May for children with a “cleft lip”.
