January 22, Ukraine celebrates the Day of Unity. On this day in 1919, the Act of Reunification of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the West Ukrainian People’s Republic took place.

This holiday was officially established in 1999, taking into account the great political and historical significance of the unification of the Ukrainian People’s Republic (UPR) and West Ukrainian People’s Republic (WUPR).

For the first time in the XX century, Ukrainian independence was proclaimed on January 22, 1918 by the IV Universal of the Ukrainian Central Rada. A year later, on January 22, 1919, the Act Zluky (Unification Act) of Ukrainian lands was proclaimed in Kyiv on Sophia Square, into a single Ukraine, the unification of the two then states of the UPR and WUPR was approved.

The human chain organized by patriotic forces on January 21, 1990 on the occasion of the 71st anniversary of the proclamation of the Act Zluky became a vivid manifestation of the unity and will of the Ukrainian people for freedom. Millions of Ukrainians holding hands from Kyiv to Lviv, marking the Day of Unity.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy in his Telegram channel congratulated Ukrainians on this holiday.
