Vsevolod Kovalchuk, acting head of the operator of the United Energy System of Ukraine (Ukrenergo), said that the extension of Burshtyn power hub may contain significant risks for Ukraine’s energy system and does not meet the interests of the state.

To Kovalchuk, the government intends to agree on contracting private investor as part of a public-private partnership for the construction of the Ukraine-EU Energy Bridge, which provides for the sale of electricity to one private company for 20 consecutive years at a predetermined price for further export to EU countries.

“From system operator’s point of view, which is responsible for united systems, the project does not meet the interests of Ukraine in terms of synchronizing the Ukrainian energy system with the European system,” the acting head of Ukrenergo emphasized.

He noted that the successful implementation of the Ukraine-EU Energy Bridge will leave the Ukrainian energy market isolated from the European one and will not provide conditions for competition, since the opportunity to export electricity from one unit of the Khmelnitsky NPP to one private company will only be opened in the end.

“We see certain significant risks and believe that there are more appropriate options,” UNIAN quotes Kovalchuk, as saying.

As The Journalist reported, Ukrenergo predict rise in electricity tariffs from July 1, 2019.
