The UN has released report on the historical rate of unemployment amid the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

COVID-19 crisis plunges the global economy into a recession with a historical level of unemployment and needs.

“The crisis could lead to a decline in 195 million fulltime equivalent workers in the Q2 of 2020 alone,” the report said.

In addition, the pandemic also creates jobs and livelihoods crisis, which threatens progress towards the UN’s sustainable development goals.

“Small and medium-sized enterprises, farm workers, the selfemployed, daily wage earners, refugees and migrant workers are hit the hardest. Jobs in the service industries are affected, including in culture and tourism. A global economic recession will impact global population movements and hence affect countries with high levels of migration and high remittance flows compared to their GDP,” the UN report reads.

However, the authors of the report suggest to take appropriate measures aimed to improve the employment situation.

“The UN response to economic recovery will focus on protecting and improving productive sectors, protecting jobs and promoting decent work,” the UN reported.
