On the territory of the Belarusian reserve “Olmansky swamps” , located in the Stolin raion (Brest oblast) bordering with Ukraine, works are underway on building and modernization of roads, that can be used for military purposes.

This is reported by the Belarusian opposition website Chartia-97 with reference to an anonymous source from one of the ministries of Ukraine. It is noted that one of the roads costs about USD 1 million.

Environmentalists are worried because of the project, as a large-scale construction brings enormous damage to a unique ecosystem.

The built road infrastructure can simplify the delivery of border guards to duty stations, as well as provide an additional opportunity for the movement of Belarusian military equipment to the Polesski fire range. In addition, the roads can be used to deliver soldiers, weapons and military equipment close to the Ukrainian border.

The data indicates that during the years 2014-2017, the Belarusian authorities created a number of access roads from the rear areas of the country and forest roads with a total length of about 96 km.

Access roads lead to the border post “Olmany”, bordering the village Perebrody of Rivne oblast, Ukraine, and to the border posts “Mutvitsa”, “Khinichev”, the checkpoint “Selishche”, bordering the Ukrainian villages of Drozdyn, Zabolotye and Poznan. In the immediate vicinity of this section of the Belarusian-Ukrainian border are Zhytomyr and Novograd-Volynsky.

A Belarusian volunteer in Ukraine, Vadim Kabanchuk, comments on the portal that this roads pose danger to the whole oblast.

“The border activity of the Belarusian side is taking place against the backdrop of the active Ukrainian-Russian conflict. All these actions can have their consequences,” said the volunteer.
