January 29, on the day of the 101st anniversary of the Battle of Kruty, in cultural center Cinema Theater “Kyiv” historical movie “Kruty 1918” (ed., Winter of the braves) was shown for press. The film is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the battle of Kruty in winter of 1918 and the 100th anniversary of the proclamation of Ukrainian People’s Republic.

For the film director Oleksiy Shaparev, this is the fourth full-length and first historical film.

Movie filming, the total budget of which amounted to 52 million hryvnia, took less than six months (from September 2017 to January 2018) and took place on the streets of Kyiv, in Kyiv fortress, near Kyiv – in the village of Pidgirtsy and Mezhigorye. Kruty station was shot in the village of Signaiievka, Cherkassy region.
In addition to actors, professional soldiers took part in filming – servicemen of National Guard of Ukraine, as well as guys from team of sotnyk Volodymyr Pravosudov (call sign “Sturm”).
In the film, in addition to specially created musical compositions by Hrystyna Soloviy “Path” (to the words of poet Ivan Franko) and “Haydamaky” band “Black Arable”, the music of the Italian composer Marco Morini sounds.

After screening media representatives had the opportunity to talk with creative team of film “Kruty 1918” and hear all the details of shooting and about the movie itself.

It seems superfluous to talk a lot about the meaning of release of movie “Kruty 1918”, it’s relevance and importance. Every Ukrainian patriot, whom, as the filmmakers hope, are the majority in our country, knows and understands this. Hundred years ago events are striking in their cyclical nature and parallels with our times, which means we have another chance. At the very least, to revive our history and not repeat mistakes.

The movie will be shown in cinemas countrywide from 7th of February.

Recall that The Battle of Kruty took place on January 29 or 30 1918 (in Soviet historiography January 29, 1918), near Kruty railway station (today the village of Pamiatne, Borzna Raion, Chernihiv Oblast), about 130 kilometres (81 mi) northeast of Kyiv, Ukraine, which at the time was part of Nezhinsky Uyezd of Chernihiv Governorate. As Bolshevik forces of about 4,000 men, commanded by Mykhailo Muravyov, advanced toward Kyiv, a small Ukrainian unit of 400 soldiers of Bakhmach garrison (about 300 of which were students), commanded by initially by Captain F.Tymchenko, withdrew from Bakhmach to a small railroad station Kruty midway towards Nizhyn. The small unit consisted mainly of the Student Battalion (Kurin) of Sich Riflemen, a unit of the Khmelnytsky Cadet School, and a Free Cossacks unit. Just before the assault Tymchenko was replaced by D.Nosenko, while Tymchenko left for Nizhyn in attempt to recruit the locally quartered Shevchenko Regiment (800 soldiers) on the Ukrainian side. Nonetheless on January 30, 1918 the regiment sided with Soviet regime, the news of which forced the Ukrainian garrison of Kruty hastily to withdraw. Over half of the 400 men were killed during the battle, which lasted up to five hours. In the Soviet historiography the battle is mistakenly dated on January 29, 1918 and confused with the Plysky rail station.Haidamaka Kish of Symon Petliura (300 soldiers) that rushed to reinforce the Kruty garrison and was delayed due to the Darnytsia railworkers sabotage stopped in close vicinity (rail station Bobryk) and eventually turned back to Kyiv due to the Bolshevik’s Arsenal Uprising that occurred on the same day.
Eleven of twenty seven students that were lost, captived, tortuted and urdered by Bolsheviks were re-buried at Askold’s Grave in the centre of Kyiv after the return of Tsentralna Rada to the capital in March 1918. At the funeral then President of Ukrainian People’s Republic, Mykhailo Hrushevsky, called every one of the 400 students who fought in the battle, heroes. In addition, poet Pavlo Tychyna wrote poem about heroic death of the students.
After the fall of the Ukrainian People’s Republic the bodies of the students were moved to Lukyanivske Cemetery in Kyiv (according to Wikipedia).
