Mininformpolitiki discussed ways to solve problems to protect journalistic activity

According to the report on the official website of Ministry of Information Policy (Mininformopolitiki), today, August 27, an expert discussion took place on the topic «Obstruction of the lawful professional activity of journalists – working hours of changes in the criminal legislation of Ukraine».

Event was attended by State Secretary of the Ministry Artem Bidenko.
Bidenko called one of the main priorities of Ministry of Information Policy protection of professional activities of journalists.

«The current criminal procedure legislation of Ukraine to some extent makes it difficult to effectively investigate crimes against journalists, and there is another plane of this problem. This is a general fall in status of journalism in society. What needs to be changed? First and foremost, the most important thing is to return status of a journalist as the basis of a democratic society», stressed state secretary of ministry.

Bidenko separately noted need for systemic actions to protect journalistic activities, in particular, at level of changes and application of existing criminal legislation. For example, if it is a question of impeding lawful professional activity of journalists.

As part of the discussion, participants also considered important aspects of European standards for the safety of journalists, as well as drafting of changes to criminal legislation.

As previously reported The Journalist, activist Oleksandr Golub noted that now many new challenges arise for journalists.
