United Nations calls on Ukrainian authorities to ensure an effective, independent and unbiased investigation of killings during Maidan protests in 2013-2014.
Five years after the protests on Maidan, only limited progress was made in investigating killings and violent deaths of 98 people (84 protesters, 13 law enforcement officers and a person who did not participate in the protests), said the UN Monitoring Mission on Human Rights in Ukraine.
In particular, only 3 people have been found guilty today, who were involved in death of two protesters, writes Unian.
UN has identified the circumstances that prevent investigation and prosecution of perpetrators:
1. During the protests, police officers did not have identification marks on form, which makes them difficult to identify;
2. Some senior police officers suspected of crimes retained their posts, which is why their subordinates do not talk about the involvement of police in killings;
3. Forensic examinations are carried out with excessive delays;
4. Many alleged perpetrators fled to the Russian Federation and, thus, inaccessible to Ukrainian justice.
As reported by “Journalist”, Iryna Gerashchenko reproached Federica Mogherini with a reluctance to visit Donbass.
