Verkhovna Rada backed amendments to Constitution confirming Ukraine’s path toward EU, NATO

The Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s parliament, has backed Presidential amendments to the Constitution of Ukraine (regarding the strategic course of the state to acquire full membership of Ukraine in the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization) (No. 9037).

A total of 335 deputies of 385 registered in the session hall have supported the law, 112 Ukraine reports.

The law in the preamble of the Constitution establishes that the Verkhovna Rada, taking care of strengthening civil consent in Ukraine and confirming the European identity of the Ukrainian people and the irreversibility of the European and Euro-Atlantic course of the country, adopts this Constitution – the Basic Law of Ukraine.

Article 85 provides that the powers of the Verkhovna Rada include determining the foundations of domestic and foreign policy, implementation the state’s strategic course for obtaining Ukraine’s full membership in the European Union and NATO.

Article 102 establishes that the president of Ukraine is the guarantor of the implementation of the state’s strategic course for obtaining Ukraine’s full membership in the European Union and NATO.

Article 116 determines that the Cabinet of Ministers ensures the implementation of the state’s strategic course for obtaining Ukraine’s full membership in the European Union and NATO.

As The Journalist reported, World Bank stated Ukraine must accelerate reforms.
