A regular meeting of an expert group on solving economic problems of Donbas, chaired by Oleh Ustenko, an aide to the Head of State, was held at the Office of the President of Ukraine.
“Given the tasks of President Volodymyr Zelensky assigned to the working group, the experts conducted analytical studies and developed recommendations that require urgent discussion and decision-making on their implementation,” Ustenko said.
According to the expert on regional development Oleksiy Starodubiv, it is advisable to create an economic hub in Donbas.
“The economic potential of Donbas is still significant. This is both natural resources and human resources, logistics, etc. All this exists in the government-controlled part of Donbas,” Starodubiv said.
He added that a methodology, which will help to determine the main stages of economic recovery in Donbas, has already been prepared.
Iryna Tytarchuk, Deputy Executive Director of the Ukrainian Center for Investment and Trade Promotion, said that such a method allows calculating the damage caused to the regional economy during the hostilities, namely, loss of infrastructure, production capacity, unauthorized use of natural resources, environmental degradation and loss of human resources.
The meeting participants also discussed the problem of water supply in Donbas.
“The key issue is to attract additional sources of water supply in the region,” experts say.
Also during the meeting, were raised issues of coal enterprises and energy supply in the region, as well as environmental problems of Donbas. Anxiety was caused by the threat of flooding of territories with mine waters.
