President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that Ukraine has the lowest coronavirus death toll compared to many countries in the world. The head of state said this while speaking at the All-Ukrainian Forum “Ukraine 30. Coronavirus: Challenges and Responses”.

Zelensky said that in the fight against pandemic, the authorities had to take an unpopular step and introduce quarantine.

“Tough quarantine, which proved to be effective,” he stressed.

According to him, all these actions of the government were constantly criticized by various political parties in order to “earn political and electoral dividends.”

“There was also interference from politicians. Various parties, various opposition leaders, local authorities did not lose the opportunity to earn electoral points. There was a huge amount of manipulation, populism, sabotage. And all of this did not help in any way in overcoming coronavirus. However, our actions were correct. Ukraine has the lowest coronavirus mortality rate in comparison with many countries of the world and European countries. We lasted the longest and did not introduce a lockdown. And those restrictions in force in January (2021) were, I think, quite liberal,” Zelensky said.

The President stressed that Ukraine has managed to significantly increase the number of beds in hospitals, and “today 70% of them are free”.
