UN urge intensify work on clearing landmines in eastern Ukraine

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) called to intensify work on demining/ destruction on the territory of Donbas of mines and shells that did not explode, the Voice of America reported.

A spokeswoman for UNHCR department, Chabi Mantu, recalled that eastern Ukraine is one of the most mine contaminated areas in the world. At present, Ukraine is second only to Afghanistan and Syria in terms of the number of people annually killed from mines.

“The organization urges to intensify governmental efforts, humanitarian organizations and all parties of the conflict in the field of demining in Ukraine. According to the annual report on mined areas, Ukraine ranks third in the world in terms of the number of people killed as a result of mines; after it only Afghanistan and Syria,” the report said.

UNHCR stated this on the eve of the international day of mine awareness on April 4.

As The Journalist reported, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution against the financing of terrorism.
