The Holy See supports the efforts of the Ukrainian people in creation a single local Orthodox church in Ukraine, the press service of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reported this after a meeting between Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin and the Secretary for Interstate Relations of the Holy See Paul Richard Gallagher.

The meeting was held on September 25 in the framework of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 73).

«An exchange of views took place regarding the process of granting autocephaly to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The Holy See respects the decision of the Ukrainian people to create a single local church,» – the Ministry reported.

The Ukrainian side stressed that Tomos, as the first step to a new church, will become an act of deep historical justice and a harbinger of peace, unity and harmony, will strengthening the constitutional principle of freedom of religion and protecting the rights and freedoms of the Ukrainian people. This process has already begun, and it is impossible to return to the status quo.

The Holy See’s support and a clear position on the provision of Tomos are important steps for strengthening the interreligious dialogue, the press service of the Foreign Ministry noted.
