**According to the conclusion of scientists of the Monash Research Institute of Biomedicine in Australia, patches in protein chains that are incapable of forming a definite structure have become one of the driving forces of evolution. About this writes Social Portal with reference to the publication in the journal Protein Evolution and Human Diseases. **
This refers to the so-called «Structural Capacitance Elements», where random mutations freely form, forming a new functional structure.
«Scientists analyzed more than 68,000 mutations in the human genome, about half of which were associated with genetic diseases, and found out what changes in DNA influenced the different types of ordering of the protein structure. It turned out that mutations in long disordered regions can form microstructures that either improve the functioning of the protein, or contribute to pathogenic interactions with other molecules», report says.
Thanks to the protein «flexibility», the process of rapid evolution of the molecule occurs in spite of the formation of «harmful» structures by long disordered regions. By becoming the foundation for subsequent stepwise changes, a microstructure appears spontaneously in the population of disordered proteins. This process allows the protein to acquire new functions.
As previously reported by The Journalist, scientists have established that laziness is main engine of evolution.
