According to the publication of Glavkom, during 2018, in order to ensure proper conditions for education for children with special needs and to form a «barrier-free space» for education, ramps were installed in 38 schools in the capital. This was told by Anna Starostenko, chairperson of the Kyiv City Council Standing Committee on Education, Science, Family, Youth and Sport.
«Respect for children begins, first of all, with providing of their basic needs. And when we talk about children with special needs, this is our first priority. Now it is difficult to imagine how schools could be built elementary without ramps. According to the program of barrier-free space, which was started last year, this year the city has provided for this more than 42 million UAH. Now the best results are in Desnianskiy district, where all educational institutions have barrier-free access. In particular, 38 educational institutions were equipped with ramps this year. We expect that by the end of the year other areas will also catch up», Starostenko explained.
It is known that in new school year in 92 schools will open 331 inclusive classes. A total of 160 assistants were trained to work with special children and help teachers in the learning process.
Appropriate inclusive resource centers have already been established in all districts of the capital in order to improve the quality of educational work with children with special needs and a director for each institution has been appointed.
