In the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) in the village of Slavske (Lviv oblast), during the renovation works, wall paintings of famous Ukrainian artists Modest Sosenko and Yulian Butsmanyuk were destroyed. In addition, ceramic tiles manufactured by the factory of Ivan Levinsky were knocked down. This was announced by the teacher of the Lviv Academy of Arts Bohdan Zyatyk on his official Facebook page.
Zyatyk said that in connection with the incident, he appealed to the law enforcement officers – to the regional police, Skole district department of National Police, and to the prosecutor’s office in Lviv region.
According to preliminary information, the administrator of the temple and parishioners warned in writing about the value of the murals and interior decoration of the temple, and the inadmissibility of their destruction, which is recorded in the public photo and video reports of scientists.
“Therefore, such actions of a priest are a gross violation of the Law of Ukraine” On the Protection of Cultural Heritage “and article 298 of the Criminal Code” Illegal search operations at the archaeological heritage site, destruction, destruction or damage of cultural heritage objects “, Zyatyk stated.
