430,000 children experience serious risks to their physical and psychological health due to the conflict in Donbas. This was reported by the press service of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
According to UNICEF, 172 children were injured or died due to landmines or other explosive objects.
During 2019, were registered 36 attacks on educational institutions, one school suffered damage 15 times. Since 2014, more than 750 educational institutions have been damaged or destroyed.
About 430,000 children live with psychological wounds and need ongoing support to address the emotional trauma of growing up in a prolonged conflict.
“It is unacceptable that children in eastern Ukraine continue to go to schools with bullet and bomb shelters and live in neighborhoods that are periodically shelled and littered with landmines,” Afshan Khan, UNICEF Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia, said.
Afshan Khan also emphasized that the accession of the Ukrainian government to the School Safety Declaration is a positive step to better protect the education system from attacks and reduce the military use of schools.
