UKRAINE: Zavodska street, located in Voznesenovsky district (a section of Sedov St. to Lermontov St.) of Zaporizhzhia was renamed Pope John Paul II.
The deputies supported the corresponding draft decision by a majority of votes during the 46th session of the City Council.
The initiative to rename a street in Zaporizhzhia in honor of the Pope was made by the Polish culture society named after St. John Paul II.
After public hearings and discussions with residents of the city, a draft on renaming part of Zavodska Street was submitted to the Zaporizhzhia City Council for consideration. During the discussion, deputies of the City Council stated that Zaporizhzhia does not yet have a single twin city in Poland, and the adoption of such a decision will allow it to draw closer to its neighbor.
The City Council noted that John Paul II (secular name – Karol Jozef Wojtyla (May 18, 1920 – April 2, 2005), the Pope (dated October 16, 1978), religious and political figure, philosopher, theologian, writer, publicist. his post proved to be a tireless fighter for human rights and freedoms, which made him a symbol of the struggle against authoritarianism throughout the world.
