Almost a week has passed since the city of Avdiivka celebrated the 5th anniversary of the liberation from the Russian-led military units (July 30). The correspondent of The Journalist has visited the settlement to find out how people live there and in what condition the city, which is located a few kilometers from the frontline, is.

Five years ago in late July, during the anti-terrorist operation, the Ukrainian armed forces drove out units of the self-proclaimed DPR from Avdiivka, which controlled the city since April 2014. Since the city is located very close to Donetsk, it still suffers from constant shelling despite the ceasefire regime.

The inhabitants of Avdiivka struggled to survive. Indeed, besides the fact that people have to live in ruined buildings with unglazed windows under the enemy fire, have to walk along mined roads, they are often deprived of basic things that are necessary for existence. For example, according to the press service of the military-civil administration of Avdiivka, on August 7 and 8 the the city was left without water supply due to repair work at the Donetsk filter station.
