Consumption of antibiotics of some groups in Ukraine has grown 5-6 times. Health Minister Maksym Stepanov announced this at a briefing.

He noted that citizens prescribe it to themselves independently, without consulting doctors.

“Our consumption of antibiotics has increased 5-6 times in some groups. When they start taking antibiotics not according to the doctor’s prescription, but on their own, without any reason … We have repeatedly emphasized that this should be done exclusively according to the doctor’s prescription,” Stepanov said.

The head of the Ministry of Health recalled that uncontrolled intake of antibiotics can lead to the development of antibiotic resistance (if they are taken uncontrollably, then at the right time they simply will not work).

Stepanov recalled that the coronavirus treatment protocol defines cases in which situations it is necessary to prescribe antibiotics.

At the same time, the minister assured that the situation with providing hospitals with antibiotics is under control.

“I have repeatedly held meetings with pharmaceutical companies. We have a completely controlled situation. Our hospitals are provided with a two-three-month supply of antibacterial drugs,” Stepanov said.

The minister urged citizens not to abuse antibiotics and seek for medical attention.
