Oleksandr Ivashchenko, the chief researcher at The Institute of Bioenergy Crops and Sugar Beet (IBC&SB) NAAS of Ukraine, said that Ukrainian farmers have sown sunflower, rapeseed and soybean in recent years, which caused reduce of soil fertility level. This was reported by the Agribusiness Today.
According to the expert, the average humus content in Ukrainian soils has decreased from 3.5 to 3% over the past 20 years. This situation caused by frequent sowing of high-marginal (high-yield – ed.) crops, while all agronomic laws are often violated.
“Today, forest shelter belts in the fields have lost their owner and are intensively cut down by the population for firewood in result of natural gas price rising. As a result, fields lose their natural protection from winds, and the soil erodes,” said Oleksandr Ivashchenko.
According to the expert, it is necessary to introduce state control over the owner of the land in Ukraine, as it was done in the EU countries.
“For example, in Germany, a state inspector can visit and check any land plot and, if finding a violation of the rules for its operation, can issue an order to the owner to eliminate them. If the landowner does not respond to the order, the inspector can sue him, and then the court may decide to prohibit the landowner from processing his own plot,” Ivaschenko said.
As The Journalist reported, Ukraine has broken historical record for export of apples.
