According to forecast of experts published by Channel 24, from two to five million Ukrainians may lose their jobs due to the extension of quarantine until the end of October.

The unemployment rate growth is expected by the Cabinet of Ministers, too. According to the official macroeconomic forecast, every tenth able-bodied Ukrainian may lose his job by the end of the year.

Almost 500,000 Ukrainians have lost their job after the first coronavirus wave. This is official data; the real figures are many times higher, says Mykhailo Kukhar, senior economist at Ukraine Economic Outlook.

“Unemployment is the most difficult consequence of the coronavirus crisis, which we have today. Even in industrialized countries. As always, strange as it may seem, Ukraine was saved by the fact that most of the market in our country is “shadowed”, and we have not seen real figures of unemployment growth,” Kukhar said.
