The Galician National Park has been replenished with the largest mammals in America – bison, the press service of the State Forestry Agency reports.

“Three animals – parents and a baby bison – were transferred to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, where a special diet was developed for them. The buffalo came from the Valley. The animals endured the move normally, they feel good and are already settling in the new territory,” said the director of the park, Oleg Gaiduk.

It is noted that a spacious aviary was set up for the bison, where the animals will be in quarantine for some time. In the future, they plan to equip a much larger exposition enclosure for animals.

American bison are known to live in large herds and are the only bovid in North America. The body length of the animal is up to 3 m, the height at the shoulders is up to 2 m, the weight is up to 1 ton.

“Bison eat grass and other luscious greens, methodically, meter by meter, moving through the pasture. Forest bison, in addition to grass, also eat leaves, shoots and branches of bushes and trees. Bison love to bathe in mud. After bathing, the animals clean their thick wool from parasites, rubbing their backs against stones and tree trunks. Bison have a well-developed sense of smell and hearing, but their eyesight is rather weak. These animals sense danger at a distance of up to 2 km, and water – at an even greater distance, for 7-8 km,” the department said.
