Meteorological winter begins in Kyiv

Climatologists of the Borys Sreznevsky Central Geophysical Observatory analyzed that a steady transition of the average daily air temperature in Kyiv took place on the last day of autumn – November 30, the press service of the observatory said.

“A steady decrease in the average daily temperature below 0° C indicates the beginning of a meteorological winter in the capital. She came almost on time, 5 days later than the climatic norm,” the message says.

So, on November 30, the average daily air temperature at the observatory’s meteorological station was -1,0° C, and according to the forecasts of the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, negative air temperatures will continue to persist.

Earlier, winter came to Kyiv on October 20 in 1920 and October 31 in 1988, and most recently on January 29 in 2015.

“By the way, last year in Kyiv the beginning of the meteorological winter was not recorded, which became a unique phenomenon for the entire observation period,” the observatory said.
