This year, various events dedicated to 85th anniversary of memory of victims of Holodomor are taking place in Ukraine and around the world. Informational 85-days campaign has begun on 1 September.
From November 12 to November 23, «Wandering» performance from the National Museum «Memorial to the Victims of the Holodomor» takes place every day in Kiev. At the same time, from November 20 to December 10, everyone in Metropolitan Gallery Lavra will be able to attend the interactive exhibition «Gareth Jones. A diary». This exposition is dedicated to a British journalist who was among the first to write the truth about Holodomor in Ukraine. On November 22-24 in Kyiv in Mystetskiy arsenal International Forum «Ukraine remembers. The world recognizes» will take place.
One of the most important events will take place on November 24th. On this day, from 14.30 to 16.00, a national minute of silence and the All-Ukrainian action «Light a Candle of Memory» will take place in Kyiv and other cities of Ukraine. In addition to Ukraine, this action will be held in 85 countries on all continents.
During press conference, Larysa Dyr, head of department for foreign Ukrainians and humanitarian cooperation at Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that the Ukrainian side had made great efforts to recognize democracies of Ukraine as an act of genocide in 1932-1933.
«Our work began with dissemination of appeal of Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to democratic states in order to recognize Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine as an act of genocide. This appeal was distributed outside our state, as well as among representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Ukraine. Further, work proceeded according to plans prepared by Foreign Ministry and foreign diplomatic institutions. The most active period is 2017 and 2018. Forums, conferences, exhibitions in parliaments, government organizations were held, and brochures and books were distributed. The results of the work carried out by foreign diplomatic institutions of Ukraine and Ministry of Foreign Affairs are maximum dissemination of information about Ukraine’s losses, consequences of Holodomor, and recognition of Holodomor by foreign parliaments and governments as an act of genocide.
I also want to draw attention to the initiative of Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the UN. There, a declaration was prepared and prepared to honor the victims of Holodomor. On November 7, 2018, this text was distributed and proposed for signature by the UN member countries. We hope that by December 9 this declaration will be signed by as many powers as possible. This would be symbolic, because it was December 9, 2018 that the 70th anniversary of the adoption by the UN General Assembly of the «Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide» was adopted», the official said.
